Dialysis in children

Dialysis is a modality of purification of blood from endogenous waste products of metabolism by external modality done during loss of function of native kidneys. It is done commonly in adults and children and is a safe procedure.

What are the reasons for which children may require dialysis?

Children may require dialysis when their kidneys have stopped purification of blood or have stopped generating urine or either. Common causes are acute kidney failure (AKI) and chronic kidney failure (CKD).

Is it true that once a child needs dialysis, he/she will always need it?

It is not completely true. Children with acute kidney failure usually require it temporarily while children with Chronic kidney disease require it till they undergo transplant.

What are the different ways of doing dialysis in children?

There are 2 ways – Hemodialysis (also known as Blood dialysis) and Peritoneal dialysis (Water dialysis). Hemodialysis is done using hemodialysis machine through which purification of blood happens. Peritoneal dialysis is done using dialysate water which is filled in peritoneal cavity of abdomen and can be done at home.

Can small children undergo dialysis and tolerate the procedure?

Yes small children can undergo dialysis safely with no pain and discomfort. It is a painless procedure and they remain comfortable. Hemodialysis and Peritoneal dialysis can be done for small babies as small as 3 kg and 2-3 months of age to adolescent age and size. Hemodialysis is done using a hemodialysis catheter which is inserted in the large veins of neck or thigh. Peritoneal dialysis is done using the catheter inserted in the abdominal cavity.

What are the benefits of doing dialysis?

Dialysis is very helpful in purifying the blood, controlling the levels of potassium and acid which can go very high in absence of it. It is also helps in removing excess water from body when the natural kidneys are not able to make enough urine.

Are all the centers equipped with dialysis in children?

Pediatric dialysis needs specialized centers who are equipped with the expertise of equipment and manpower who care capable and experienced to handle such cases. Pediatric Nephrologist along with his team of Pediatric dialysis technicians and dialysis unit are needed for successful dialysis in small kids.
